
By A Correspondent- President Manyara Irene Muyenziwahas reiterated the importance of empowering women as a way of addressing their various daily challenges including domestic violence.
Her statement comes a few days after the FORUS party joined Zimbabwea and the rest of the world in commemorating International Women’s Day.
The day, celebrated on the 8th of March, under the theme “Gender Equality Today For A Sustainable Tomorrow” aims at appreciating women and their social, economic, cultural and political contribution to the global developmental agenda including averting the climate crisis.
She said:
“Women empowerment is cardinal in arresting the scourge of domestic violence currently bedeviling societies.
Domestic violence has been on the rise within the nation, thus creating a worrisome trait which urgently requires measures to arrest it.
Women bear the brunt of violence in family units as they are common victims.FORUS will be empowering women through granting them access to means of production such as land.
Women in Zimbabwe constitute more than 58 percent of the whole population hence the need to include them in critical national issues for economic growth and stability.
Gender based violence is usually a result of economic hardships currently obtaining in the country hence the lack of equilibrium in the power dynamics between women and men.
The world commemorates the International Women’s Day on the 8th of March every year.
The upcoming 2023 harmonised elections proffer the opportunity for the nation to elect a woman president to lead the nation.”
